Kong Wei Yang has a rare genetic disorder called Lesch-Nyhan syndrome, which affects roughly one in 380,000 people and occurs almost exclusively in boys. It prevents the body from properly recycling purines, leading to excess uric acid, neurological impairment, uncontrollable muscle contractions, and compulsive self-injurious behaviour.
He takes three medications to manage his symptoms, but doctors believe his best chance of improving his quality of life is deep brain stimulation (DBS), a procedure that uses implanted electrodes to reduce involuntary movements.
The device alone can cost up to RM150,000.
Altogether, the family needs about RM250,000 to cover the surgery and post-operative care.
Wei Yang currently attends a community-based rehabilitation programme in Puchong three times a week, accompanied by his mother.
The family now hopes Wei Yang can undergo the DBS procedure as soon as possible, with Suriana Welfare Society Malaysia helping them raise the necessary funds.
